Class D motor 73, at Granite City in 1953.
The Illinois Terminal Class D motors, 70-74, were company built at the Decatur Shops in 1940-1942.
Specifications were: 55ft5in long, 9ft11in wide, weighed 217K pounds, and had eight Westinghouse 571FD1 motors, St Louis 82 trucks and HLF control.
They were constructed from older Class C locomotives. The 73 was rebuilt from the 1584. These were the workhorses of the freight business.
Each set of two trucks rode on a span bolster which then rode on a body bolster, hence being called "articulated". (The Class Cs were similar in this regard).
The controls had series/series-parallel/parallel/parallel-shunt connections, thus resulting in connections to the motors of 150vdc 300vdc 600vdc, hence developing great starting torque.
All were sold for scrap -- none were saved. This probably happened when electric freight operation came to an end in 1956.
