Accident at 38th Ave and East 14th St on March 12 1942. At 445AM, a Key train hit an open switch and jumped the tracks and blocked E Oakland traffic for hours injuring the conductor. The train was outbound on E 14th St and carried no passengers, but the conductor, HC Eliot, 32, of 2008 Emerson St, Berkeley, was cut and shaken up. The Motorman, J Collins, of 4608 Market St, escaped injury. There was little traffic at the time of the accident or the damage and injuries might have been greater, police said. The big train tore up the gutter and sidewalk as it ground across the pavement and hit with a crash against a drugstore operated by AC Butler at 3800 East 14th St. The two-car train stood in a jackknifed position at the intersection for more than four hours as crewman worked to put it back on the rails.
