Car 997 at the St Denis carhouse in September 1956. The 900 series cars were built for the Montreal Street Railway in 1906-1907 just after the Pay As You Enter (PAYE) system came into effect.
Passengers were expected to pay the conductor upon entering the car. Previously, the conductor would pass through the car collecting fares.
The large numbers in a red box on the front warned passengers that it was a PAYE car and to have their fares ready.
By 1956, 997 was retired. Today car 997 is preserved at Exporail, the railway museum just south of Montreal.
