What became the Key System was originally formed as the San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose Railway in 1902.

In 1904, the Key System bought 18 used streetcars from Lehigh Valley Traction. This is one of the 12 cars rebuilt in 1906 for interurban service, installing pantographs, end-train doors, entrance gates, buffer plates, pilots, and MU equipment.

496 is in the Yerba Buena yard, along with two trailers and another motor in 1910.
